We spent the remainder of the week with friends who also came down to visit at J’s place in Denver. This pic is one of many but shows my view from the back porch every morning as I had my coffee and read yet another book. I think I read….hmmm…maybe 10 books the whole time I was down there.
We went to the raptor center and got to see what a lot of hard work can do to rehabilitate birds and reintroduce them to the wild. And we got to see the love lavished on those birds that would never been able to be reintroduced, be it from injury or accidental imprinting. I snagged a few things at the little gift shop, but by the time we were leaving, the headache had started. Oi. Thunderstorms coming and you could see them, but they didn’t break over us or anywhere we went for the evening. We were lucky. My head was not lucky.

I had no idea 5 adults could have so much fun with 144 sparklers. (Of course the two 5ths of whiskey may have had something to do with it.) I was the sober one. They had this amazing construction session where they put boxes and boxes of the sparklers into the ground, each sparkler touching the next one in some way, and then lit the first one. They all ended up lighting a’la a chain of dominoes, which was pretty amazing when you consider exactly how intoxicated they were. A shame that kind of thing doesn’t photograph well with my measly little digicam.
Went to the Charlotte airport to pick up a friend from online that we’d never met before and we were shocked at how easy it was to spot him, especially considering we’ve really only ever seen him in avatar form (his Berserker or his Warlock in EQ2). He spotted us right away too, so it was mutual. Surrounded by friends of long standing and new ones besides. Great vacation so far. I hope to post some pictures soon if I can figure out how to connect my uploader to the computers here.
Miss you all terribly.

A sampling of things I have learned on my vacation to date:
(1) All North Carolina waitresses are required to call you “honey.”
(2) I do not live in ‘Detroit’ I live in “DEE-troit.” (Suburb? Never heard of it.)
(3) The ABC warehouse does not sell electronics.
(4) Unsweetened iced tea is un-American but if you show them your medic-alert tag, you’re upgraded to Damn Yankee again.
(5) Men of all ages still blush in the south when sweet old ladies at the corner drugstore at least 80 years of age and named “Betty” tell them all they’re the most beautiful thing she’s seen all morning (and they only opened 5 minutes ago).

I’ve had about four hours of sleep and it doesn’t seem to be a bad thing. I went to bed to the sound of frogs and woke up to the same. I’ve read three books already today, though don’t tell anyone. They might think I was a freak. The woods are gorgeous, relaxing, and exactly what I needed. The porch is mighty comfy.
And for the record, Walden is self-indulgent, hypocritical crap. Ok. Maybe it was four books today. It’s still crap. The lit police are gonna have a field day on my ass. Don’t tell them about that one either.

The cats are wrestling on the kittie condo and I’m listening to the sudden silence after a round of neighborial lawn care. Birds chirping brightly in the trees near my window say “HEY! HEY! Hey baby! Hey!”.
Surprisingly, I have no cup of coffee in my hands yet, nor even tea, but I can’t help smiling at the breeze that plays across my skin through the open window. Lightly cool, smelling of fresh promises and dreams.
We leave when The Big Guy wakes, heading to North Carolina to stay in the home of a friend (one view of his house shown in pic). I’ve let my love sleep in after a hellish week at work where 12-14+ hour days have been the norm. He’s still tired from getting home late after our very pleasant evening eating grilled chicken (damn me for not writing down the recipe) and drinking bubbly. Much bubbly. arianna_pheadra and dukeeliahu played host last night. Thankyou, you guys. What a perfect ending. What a perfect beginning.
